How to open an EPUB file

Use an ebook reader rather than a PDF viewer or word processor. If one reader opens the book and another does not, validate the EPUB before repeatedly converting it.

Open the file with an EPUB reading app

On a phone or computer, choose an ebook app that explicitly supports EPUB and import the file. Google Play Books accepts personal EPUB uploads. On Kindle, send the EPUB through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service; copying a raw EPUB over USB is a different path and may not work like a native Kindle book.

Open an EPUB on Windows

Install a reputable EPUB reader or library app, then use its Open or Import command. If double-clicking launches the wrong program, use Windows’ “Open with” menu and choose the reader. Avoid renaming the file to PDF; changing an extension does not convert the publication.

Open an EPUB on Mac, iPhone or iPad

Use an installed ebook app that supports EPUB. From Files, Downloads, Mail or a browser, use the share or open action and select the reading app. If the book is protected by a store’s DRM, open it with the service that supplied it rather than attempting to alter the file.

Open an EPUB on Android or in a browser

Google Play Books can accept PDF and EPUB uploads into your personal library and sync them across signed-in devices. A dedicated local reader is another option when you do not want to upload the book to a cloud library. Browser extensions vary in privacy and EPUB feature support, so verify who receives the file.

Open an EPUB on Kindle

Amazon lists EPUB as a supported Send to Kindle input. Amazon converts the uploaded file before it appears in the Kindle library, which is why an EPUB can open in another app yet fail delivery or lose its cover. Use web upload, mobile share or an approved Kindle email address, then verify that processing completed.

If the EPUB file will not open

Confirm the filename ends in .epub and the download completed.
Try one other known-good EPUB reader to separate an app problem from a file problem.
Run a private structural check for an unreadable ZIP directory, missing container.xml, malformed package XML or absent resources.
If no ZIP tool can list the contents, restore a clean download or source export rather than editing the damaged copy.
If it opens locally but fails on Kindle, diagnose Send to Kindle packaging and cover metadata separately.
